Swedes and their sense for good food and quality is known worldwide. Hua Hin has a couple Swedes too, and this one is running a restaurant. His name is Jörgen Mårtensson and he runs Mårtensson’s Taverna – High quality food, as he explains. He came here for the first time in 2005 and has only been back in Sweden for 5 days since then. He properly fell in love with Hua Hin, as so many others do.
Having 20 years of experience working with top chefs in Sweden cooking seafood, and former experience running restaurants in Turkey, Jörgen is set tightly in golden beach town Hua Hin.
Mårtensson’s speciality is fresh seafood. If you want to order something like lobster, clams or crab, you need to order it the day before – cause as he says, with a very serious look, “I don’t want to make people sick by not serving fresh food”.
Stating the above, Jörgen points out that he is very keen on keeping an overall good hygiene in his restaurant. Thailand does not have heal code inspectors as they do in Scandinavia, so he is his own, managing the staff, giving them different posts to keep clean all the time. A fact he is quite pleased about, and with good reason – His guest will surely feel safer eating at his restaurant compared to other, less clean places.
As he has two different kitchens, one for Thai food and one for European food, he caterers to all. One specialty he like to proclaim, and also especially advertises for, is Isaan food – Foods from the northern part of the country and quite different from regular Thai food. Isaan food contains a lot of herbs and vegetables, and is often quite spicy. As Jörgen understands that only people from Isaan normally eat this, his advertisements strictly is in Thai.
What sets restaurants apart is a location and specialities served. Mårtenssen’s Terverna main dish is the Fish Plank set at 260 bath. In the high seasons in Hua Hin his restaurant is filled with people just craving this dish.
Being a Scandinavian, Christmas is very important to him, and that’s why he every Christmas holds Christmas dinners which are extremely popular. Last year he had to have 2 sets of dinners to comply with the demand – This year he expects it to be even bigger. So, if you are in town on the 24’th of December, be sure to stop by Mårtenssons’ Taverna.
