The Hua Hin Regatta is one of Hua Hin's characteristic annual sporting events. It has been held for eight years to commemorate His Majesty King Bhumibol's excellence in sailing. The first Hua Hin Regatta was held in December 2000 as a long distance race.
In the yachting event of the 1966 SEAP—the equivalent of today's Southeast Asian Games or SEA Games—His Majesty shed new luster on sporting future of Thailand with his invention of the Super Mod fleet, coupled with his victory in the OK Class sailing races.
On April 19th 1966 His Majesty sailed a single-handed OK dingy "Vega" 60 nautical miles across the Gulf of Thailand . It took him seventeen hours from the Klai Kangwol Royal Summer Palace to the Toey Gnam Bay at the Royal Thai Marine Headquarters in Sattahib.
Following the marvelous victory, His Majesty gave the rudder of "Vega" to the Royal Thai Navy. The historical relic was, in return, given to the Yacht Racing Association to serve as a perpetual trophy for the long distance race of the Hua Hin Regatta every year.
This year the Vega Rudder is won by Lieutenant Damrongsak Wongtim and Mr.Sakda Wongtim from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King.
Since December 5th this year marks His Majesty's eightieth birthday anniversary, the Hua Hin Regatta 2007 specially features the premier race joined by eighty Super Mod fleets to celebrate the auspicious occasion. The eighty fleets are built after His Majesty's design of Super Mod, which was patented in England.
The winner of the Super Mod race is Mr.Harrith Ammry Nassution from the Yacht Racing Association of Malaysia.
Nowadays Super Mod is greatly favored by sailors in the international level. In commemorating Super Mod's outstanding status in the world-class sailing sphere, the SEA Games 2007 hosted by Thailand from December 5th to 15th will bring a Super Mod race wherein sailors vie for the sole gold medal.

The trophies this year is presented to winners by Privy Councilor Rear Admiral Assanee Pramote Na Ayudhaya, on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol.
From its first year to the present, The Hua Hin Regatta has become acknowledged in the ever-growing scale. It is now featured on the sailing and traveling calendars worldwide.
Spectators may watch the races onshore on the beachfront of Sofitel of Centara Grand Resort & Villas Hua Hin. The Royal Navy of Thailand also provides a boat for spectators who would like to get a close-up view at sea.
The Hua Hin Regatta 2007 is televised on a sport channel of Hua Hin Cable, the Hua Hin-based cable television network.
