By Car: From Bangkok you can take Highway No. 4 (Phetchakasem Rd.) and turn left at Km. 80 for another 25 km along Bangpae-Damnoen Saduak Rd.
Damnoen Saduak is one of the provincial districts of the Rajburi Province. Both the sides of the canal from one end of the canal to another are inhabited by people and hence it is a densely populated area. Majority of these people are agriculturists. They grow different kinds of fruits and vegetables for example- oranges, grapes, papayas, cabbage, beans, onion and etc. The land in this area is naturally fertile. Apart from providing transportation, Damnoen Saduak Canal also provides farmers with adequate water for agricultural purposes for the whole year around. More than 200 small canals were dug by local peasants to connect with it, to get water to splatter their land. Moreover; these small canals also become propitious ways of taking their agricultural products to the markets in neighboring provinces and Bangkok.
The colorful and vivacious backdrop of The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market makes it a really charming place. Lots and lots of vegetables, fruits, traditional sweets, beverages, straw hats and more, are fully loaded into several small boats for sale to visitors. What's more important is that the market is environmentally friendly. Boats must switch off their engines before being allowed into the ‘business area’. The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a very attractive place for tourists to see the old style and traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables, etc., from small boats. Tourists can also see traditional Thai houses, the way they live and travel by boats, and can try riding on a small boat to truly experience the floating market. This will definitely be a worthwhile trip.
According to history, around 1866 King Rama IV ordered that a 32 km long canal
Day in and day out from about 8 a.m. to about 11 a.m. the Floating Market is routinely crowded with hundreds of vendors and purchasers floating in their small rowing boats, selling and buying or exchanging their goods. What they generally sell is food, fruit and vegetables which are mostly brought from their own orchards. They usually travel on their small rowing boats. | All text and pictures found on this website belongs to Hua Hin Online Co., Ltd. - The text and/or pictures cannot be used without written permission from Hua Hin Online. huahin-online.com © 2007 Hua Hin Online Co.,Ltd. |
