Life at Damnoen Saduak

Damnoen Saduak is one of the provincial districts of the Rajburi Province. Both the sides of the canal from one end of the canal to another are inhabited by people and hence it is a densely populated area. Majority of these people are agriculturists. They grow different kinds of fruits and vegetables for example- oranges, grapes, papayas, cabbage, beans, onion and etc. The land in this area is naturally fertile. Apart from providing transportation, Damnoen Saduak Canal also provides farmers with adequate water for agricultural purposes for the whole year around. More than 200 small canals were dug by local peasants to connect with it, to get water to splatter their land. Moreover; these small canals also become propitious ways of taking their agricultural products to the markets in neighboring provinces and Bangkok.

The friendly ambience

Life at the floating marketThe colorful and vivacious backdrop of The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market makes it a really charming place. Lots and lots of vegetables, fruits, traditional sweets, beverages, straw hats and more, are fully loaded into several small boats for sale to visitors. What's more important is that the market is environmentally friendly. Boats must switch off their engines before being allowed into the ‘business area’. The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a very attractive place for tourists to see the old style and traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables, etc., from small boats. Tourists can also see traditional Thai houses, the way they live and travel by boats, and can try riding on a small boat to truly experience the floating market. This will definitely be a worthwhile trip.

The way back then

Back in the times of The Floating MarketAccording to history, around 1866 King Rama IV ordered that a 32 km long canal
be dug at Damnoen Saduak. This canal would connect the Mae Klong River with the Tacheen River. The Damnoen Saduak District of Ratchaburi first showed itself to the eyes of the tourist world in 1967 when pictures were seen of a market trading on water- paddle boats loaded with all of life's necessities plied their trade up and down the river. The various vendors are often dressed in dark clothing, similar to that worn by workers in the fields, their faces shielded from the strong rays of the sun by hats made from bamboo and palm leaves. They paddle up and down the waterway selling and bartering their merchandise.
It is generally known as Klong Ton Khem Floating Market or Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Nowadays, the market buzzes with activity from very early in the morning until about 11 am.

Giving it a visit?

Day in and day out from about 8 a.m. to about 11 a.m. the Floating Market is routinely crowded with hundreds of vendors and purchasers floating in their small rowing boats, selling and buying or exchanging their goods. What they generally sell is food, fruit and vegetables which are mostly brought from their own orchards. They usually travel on their small rowing boats.
Afetr arriving at Damnoen Saduak, you can either walk on the passage along the canal on the right hand side or take a boat at the nearby pier to the Floating Market area at the price of Baht 10 per person. Those who want to see all the three Floating Markets, Ton Khem, Hia Kui, Khun Phithak may hire a boat at the price of Baht 300 per hour. It is recommended that the fare should be settled before starting off.
