Kindness and freedom
Seasoned tour leaders, Danish Martin and his wife Tuk, run Tuk Tours in the way best described as “a small one with a biggest heart”. Here, not only the hosts are kind to the extreme, you may also get an excursion that truly is “tailor-made”.
Tuk Tours is housed in a fisherman’s home-turned-office on the small Poonsuk Road. The rustic Chinese-style building in white and cream tones looks like a home of a generous local rather than a commercial site—not to mention one in such a highly competitive business as tour agencies.
Instead of such typical sight found at tour agencies as an air-conditioned room sectioned away from the outside by glass doors plastered with airlines’ logo stickers, Tuk Tours greets its visitors with the coffee-corner patio extending from the two large entrances.
A cup of coffee may be ordered at Tuk Tours but it mostly is served to guests free of charge. Travelers are welcomed to visit the couple hosts—Tuk and Martin, take a seat, and enjoy their coffee as they spend hours finding out traveling information in an all friendly atmosphere here.
Tuk and Martin are remarkably generous. They never mind taking time filling you in on destinations you are interested in or giving you miscellaneous, unrelated suggestions. Their assistance doesn’t cost a baht, euro, or dollar, but just like every visitor to Tuk Tours, you are bound to give them all your heart in return. It goes without saying.
“One of my friends said I should charge non-client visitors for traveling information I give them. I don’t want to commercialize my heartfelt aids that way, though. I said to my friend to imagine himself having a hard time in another country. Think how warm it would feel to have helping hands reached out to you when you are in need.
“We don’t want to be their mere momentary acquaintances. We love making friends.” says Tuk.
“We strive for high-quality service. We are not here to make the most money as we can off of our customers. We try to make their vacation worthwhile.” Martin elaborates their beyond-business aspiration.
Most of Tuk Tours’s clients are from Scandinavia countries—Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Tuk has been involved with the Scandinavia and its people for 15 years. The story began when she made an exchange student to Denmark back in 1992. That one valuable year cradled her Danish speaking ability, which would pave way for her in the tour business in the years to come. Hatched by the internship a human resource firm that supplies personnel for foreign tour agencies, in 1999 Tuk transitioned to a professional tour guide in a leading tour agency. Mainly arranging Thailand tour packages for visitors from the Scandinavia, the company allowed Tuk a great and continual opportunity to excel in Danish. She was based in Pattaya for one year before being posted in the Hua Hin office, where she met her future husband Martin, in 2000.
Martin entered their former company in that very same year. The man served as a leader of Scandinavian tour groups until he and Tuk split from the company to open their Tuk Tours in 2005.
Tour business has grown at a rapid rate. Over the past two years, there have been almost 900 firms registered as tour agencies countrywide. However, under the unfavorable wind from the reversed direction, 200-300 terminated their operation last year. In major destinations, the competition gets leaner and meaner each day. In a tight spot like Hua Hin, why do travelers who opt for Tuk Tours return to them and recommend them to their friends who would like to visit Hua Hin and Thailand?
Of course, their being not frustratingly commercial for one. The benevolence for two. But what else?
Wherever you want, and whenever
You may get your traveling wants and miscellaneous details formed into a personalized tour package. That’s what we call “tailor-made package”—the itineraries that come from the two-way communication between you and your tour agency. You may specify your stay duration, destinations and your accommodation of choice.
However, there are certain aspects that your specificities may go off-limit to tour agencies in general—but not to Tuk Tours.
At Tuk Tours, you may specify not only where you would like to visit, but also when. Tour agencies in general set days for certain destinations. For example, if the customers would like to visit the Floating Market in Ratchaburi, they would have to wait for Monday, Tuesday, or whichever day the excursion to the site is set for.
That is not the case for Tuk Tours. If you’d like to visit a place in one particular day, let them know. And, you will get to explore your destination on that day.
Four is good to go
Tuk Tours is also very generous about the minimum number of people in your group. Some agencies would ask you to wait around for six more people to form a larger group for them to lead. But at Tuk Tours, if you come in four, that is good enough to go.
High-profile tour guides
Tuk assures that all the guides at Tuk Tours are fluent in English. Besides, thanks to their years leading Scandinavian tour groups, the guides have good understanding on people from the region. If you come in a group of eight or more and would like a Danish-speaking guide, Martin will make the tour leader himself. The extra fee is steep.
Price-cut options
Would like to save the cost a bit? You may ask to get on a non-guide tour. The taxi driver will take you to the places you would like to visit. Then you and the folks have a go on your own. You may discuss with Tuk and Martin, seeking other ways to spare more budget. Feel no shame. They are very kind and understanding.
