Blessed with pristine flora and mature history, the Kingdom’s first golf course remains invincible over decades.
Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is the oldest golf course in the Kingdom of Thailand. The first milestone of Thailand’s golf history is also a significant symbol of Hua Hin’s linkages to the royalties. The construction of the course was mandated by King Rama VI in 1919. The site opened as Thailand’s first standard golf course, with Par-72 eighteen holes, during the reign of King Rama VII. In 1928, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course welcomed the royalties and the nobility to its 240-acre area which ran along the verdant Hin Lek Fai hillside.
Adjacent to the course is Hua Hin Railway Station, which is regarded as the most beautiful railway station in the Kingdom. The architecture is an epitome of King Rama VI-style art—the unique marriage between Thai and European designs.
All senses from the past are religiously reserved. Today golfers from all over the world can partake in the pristine beauty and the historic grandeur of this majestic golf course all year round.
The golf course was built on the genuine, unmodified greenery of Hin Lek Fai foothills and its reservation is the one of the policies held supreme by every management team. From the beginning of the course’s history, the pristine nature from the past has been blessed with highly varied mature flora and regular visits by wildlife. “This is the only golf course in Thailand where naturally grown big trees are found.” says Royal Hua Hin Golf Course General Manager, Senior Captain Chao Pobtasnapong.
Colossal centuries-old silk trees branch out to provide cooling shades for people and warm habitats to birds. About 10 meters to the left of 7th Hole’s green, six meters of the ground, a hole in a banyan tree is claimed home by a pair of owls. For years, the goody has cautiously stolen glances of visitors while her husband will fly out and hover around the area as if to guard his home and family from strangers.
In the morning, monkeys and peacocks make their way down from the nearby hills to feed on grass and grains. Bushes of vivid yellow Baanburi flowers make the scenes so full of life. Beckoned by rice grains sprinkled on the fairway waysides, schools of jungle fowls prance off to animate the twilight.
The view that represents Thailand’s golfing awaits you on 14th Hole’s. The elevated tee zone reveals a full mystical sight of Bussayabunpot Temple, which rears up in the majestic Ton-Gnew Hill. The fairway plunges down and then lurches up to the green. These elements form such sophisticated dimensions that a capturing of 14th Hole is used by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in promoting Hua Hin worldwide.
Majestic, centuries-old trees that provide sanctuary for the creatures are double-edged swords to the golfers. Though labeling it a love-hate relationship will probably be too harsh, a euphemistic statement is however quite unconceivable. The verdant grandeur that enchants, in the meantime, presents golfers with height-induced obstacles. Additional to them are the well-known narrow fairways, challenging dog legs and recurring waters. Lay all your skills on the table. Swing it. Hook it. Slide it. Drift it through. Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is a real arena for pros. The Bhirombhakdi family, which founded the 74-year-old company and runs it to the present, has had athletic renown for generations. The third-generation President of Boon Rawd Brewery, Santi Bhirombhakdi, is a multi-athlete himself, and is best known in the sport world as a seasoned golfer.
Since Boon Rawd Brewery became in charge in 1985, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course has constantly seen improvements in terms of facilities while reservation of the original nature and historical contingents remains the heart of its policies. Results are the incomparable combination of pristine foothills and prestigious royal legacies.
The new clubhouse, which houses the restaurant, golf accessory store “Pro Shop”, locker and shower rooms, and the administration office, was built behind the original one. The original clubhouse “Sala Prachatipok”, put up in form of a white compact log cabin, exclusively served King Rama VII.
The heartfelt management in details is ensured by the right man being put in the right place. Current General Manager of Royal Hua Hin Golf Course Senior Captain Chao Pobtasnapong has seven years of golfing experience and is equipped with a great sense of discipline that was ingrained in him over decades in the Marines. Over the past three years in the position, Sen.Capt.Chao has worked devotedly as an integral part of Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. Playing nine holes for two hours every evening, Sen.Capt.Chap gets to inspect the condition of the course by himself and in return works closely with the staff in maintaining the course at its full form.
The man dedicates himself in improving the visual values of the course as well as implanting the right awareness in the personnel. More than 200 caddies are summoned every month for a conference. Fallen leaves are cleaned off the course twice a week and new flowers are constantly planted to light up the verdant view.
For decades, Singha Beer producer Boon Rawd Brewery, the operator of Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, has established itself as an integral part in the progress of Thailand’s athletic sphere. Being a well-known golf pro himself, President Santi undauntedly offers support to Thailand’s golfing in all levels.
At Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, children are allowed to practice on the Chipping Range and the Driving Range free of charge every evening. They also enjoy such a low green fee rate as 50baht, as opposed to 1,200baht and 1,500baht for adults.
“Who knows, these kids might become national pros one day.” Sen.Capt.Chao says with a gentle smile.
Almost every of all Thai golf pros today has been fostered by Singha Beer since childhood. Prom Meesawad and Prayad Marksaeng, to name some. The two pros, as well as other big names in the industry, have received heartfelt support since their unknown days up to now that their participations in overseas tournaments are provided by Singha.
